Reopening of the Frosch shop in downtown Mainz

High-quality specialty shop is popular with the locals and tourists

Downtown Mainz has again added a specialty store to its attractions. The reopening of the Frosch shop at Schöfferstraße 6 comes just three months after a fire in the retail store owned and operated by the Mainz cleaning products manufacturer Werner & Mertz.

“We are happy to have direct contact with our customers once more in our ‘jewel box’ of a shop near the cathedral. For more than 150 years we have been a part of the history of Mainz and now we are again a permanent feature of downtown Mainz,” says Werner & Mertz owner Reinhard Schneider.

Info exchange helps both customers and store team

The shop reopens on the weekend with a customer event featuring games, small gifts and, most of all, lots of time for conversations.

“Direct interaction with customers helps us to learn and to become even better. We can pass along the customers‘ ideas and wishes to the responsible specialized departments in the company,” says Store Manager Daniela Löv.

Since the beginning, Werner & Mertz has used the retail shop for marketing research too. In the past three years since the opening, customers have had the chance to test new Frosch products themselves in the shop or at home in Home-Use Checks and submit their evaluations.

“Our customers know that their opinions are important to us. We take them seriously. Some product variants that were a hit in the Frosch shop have been made available across the country,” says Karin Greve, Head of the Marketing Team for the Frosch brand in Germany.

A special highlight was the Hibiscus Event that drew attention to the new scent variant of the Frosch fabric softener. Similiar events will be held in the future and publicized in advance with posters in the shop and in postings on Frosch brand social media channels.

Expert advice and exclusive products

In the meantime, a loyal customer base has beome established. A customer might come by with an article of clothing that has a stubborn stain and ask for help.

“Our regular customers appreciate the chance to get expert advice. We can help quickly by telling them which of our products is best suited for solving household problems,” says Löv.

Tourists like visiting the store, for example, when looking for a souvenir from a long-established Mainz company. Many customers are happy to find a broad selection of Frosch products such as variants of Frosch shower gels or Frosch Oase room fresheners.

The Frosch shop also offers exclusive promotional items like T-Shirts, doormats, lunch boxes and a Frosch spritzer glass. “That can be used at the Mainz market breakfast just around the corner,” Löve suggests.

Technical defect caused the fire

In the middle of the night on 22 March, a technical defect caused a battery in the store to catch fire. At that time, no one was in the shop. Passers-by saw the fire and immediately alerted the fire department, so it was possible to keep the damage to a minimum.  Right after the investigation was closed, the Mainz family-run company started the clean-up work and the renovation with the goal of reopening the shop as soon as possible.

“We thank the firefighters and the passers-by who noticed the fire and raised the alarm. Thanks go to our landlord, Bistum Mainz, who helped us immensely to realize our wish to reopen the store as quickly as possible. At a time when efforts are being made to revitalize downtown ares, we are sending a positive signal with our commitment to our Mainz location,” says Schneider.
